FAQ’s of Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) allows for a controlled process of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin, which triggers new collagen production. Microneedling is utilized to treat the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne and acne scars, minor, non-keloid trauma scars, hypo/hyperpigmentation, and improving the skin’s overall appearance. It is also used to treat hair loss. Microneedling is often combined with the use of topical serums to enhance results.

What is nanoneedling?

Nanoneedling is a similar technique that utilizes microscopic silicone tips that work at the most superficial level, only impacting the epidermis. Nanoneedling is used on areas that are too delicate for microneedling, such as the lips and directly underneath the eyes. Nanoneedling results in increased cell turnover, skin rejuvenation and an immediate glow with no downtime.

Who can perform microneedling?

In Maryland, only licensed medical professionals are legally allowed to perform microneedling. As acupuncturists, we’re more familiar than any other type of healthcare practitioner with using needles to help the body heal. As an added bonus, we offer a unique combination of acupuncture and microneedling together to amplify results by balancing the entire system rather than just addressing the skin at the superficial level.

How long does an appointment for micro-needling take, and how often can I have it done?

Microneedling generally takes 60 minutes to complete, depending on the area(s) being treated. An additional 20-30 minutes is added for the optional use of topical numbing cream before the treatment starts, therefore it is best to put aside 90 minutes for the appointment. Microneedling treatments are spaced at least one month apart to allow the skin to fully heal in between.

How is microneedling administered?

Microneedling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile, sharps disposable one-time use micro-pen needle head. The micro-pen is gently pressed into the skin, and glides across the surface with the help of hyaluronic acid to induce new collagen and elastin production. The micro-pen used by Zenith Acupuncture oscillates 18,000 times per minute, which is double the industry standard. This results in a more effective and more comfortable treatment.

What areas can I treat with Microneedling?

Microneedling can essentially be used on any part of the body. The most popular areas to treat are the face, neck, and chest. Microneedling can also be effective to reduce most types of non-keloid scars.

Does microneedling hurt?

Microneedling is more comfortable than many other cosmetic procedures. That said, everyone is different, and some people might experience minor discomfort. For those who prefer, a topical numbing agent can be applied 20 minutes prior to the treatment.

When will I begin to see results from my microneedling treatment?

Generally, patients notice tightening and a more even tone to their skin a week or two after their first session. For areas with deeper imperfections, results can be subtler, and additional treatments are usually required. Since micro-needling stimulates new collagen and elastin production, these results will continue to build for up to 6 months.

How long do results from microneedling results last?

For best results, a series of 4 treatments is performed over a 4-month period. After that, results can last up to 3-5 years and even longer with a maintenance treatment done every 4-6 months.

Is there any downtime after a microneedling session?

There is technically no downtime required after microneedling. After your treatment, your skin might be red. This is normal and to be expected, and usually lasts 12-48 hours. You may also have a little swelling in some areas. It is recommended to avoid certain skin-care products, sun, soap, and sweat for 24 hours after treatment. Hyaluronic acid may be used to counter any dryness experienced after treatment. Some patients go straight back to work after their visit, while others prefer to schedule their treatment when they have some time off.

Are there any side effects or possible risks to microneedling?

Microneedling is considered a safe treatment for all skin types. The only side effects associated with microneedling are temporary swelling and redness. Microneedling and nanoneedling are less expensive and safer than many other cosmetic procedures on the market while remaining just as effective, if not more! These procedures may actually be safer for individuals with darker skin tones because they do not impact pigmentation the same ways lasers might. Both microneedling and nanoneedling improve your skin’s ability to absorb products, so you’re gaining the most benefit from self-treatments done at home.

Who is NOT a candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling is not recommended for those with open wounds, active skin infections, and inflammatory skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, and cold sores. It is also contraindicated for those with bleeding disorders, weakened immune systems, autoimmune disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those taking retinoids and isotretinoin, as those medications can make the skin more sensitive to microneedling.
